GeordieSteve
What are the positives and negatives of a powerglide box? I've tried to do my research but there's nothing on here and no search on Supraforums What are Powerglides like for day to day driving and on track? Where can I buy one and does anyone have a rough idea of prices?
tDR
- 3-Speed, so limited top end Agricultural old things so soak up lots of power as heat + Big wall of torque so ace on the strip Can take silly amounts of torque Cheers, Brian.
GeordieSteve
I was under the impression the powerglide was a 2 speed box
tDR
I was under the impression the powerglide was a 2 speed box You're probably right as I've not looked into them, just really the TH400 type conversions and assumed Powerglide was another name for a particular type of TH400. The +'s and -'s will still apply though. Cheers, Brian.
GeordieSteve
I'm not sure if they'll be the same as it's a different box all together. hmmmm best go do some more revision I think. Cheers!
Chris Wilson
I had one in a Vauxhall Viscount in the early seventies. The `box was a total dinosaur then. It's capable of handling serious torque, with the right modifications, but unless you HAVE to run one, why would you want to run one? To be honest, unless you have a machine shop of your own, the cost of all the fabrication to run one is totally prohibitive. If you want a drag car run a Lenco. if you want a fast road car run the stock manual Getrag. If you want a serious track car run a Hewland or a tricked out Borg Warner dog box. GeordieSteve
Ok well I drive the car now and again on the road (once a week maybe) but I intend to track it a bit at around 600bhp for now. What would be the best box in your opinion?
Chris Wilson
Stock Getrag 6 speed with a decent clutch. An auto to manual conversion will be a lot cheaper than a decent auto upgrade using a different auto box casting. Although the stock Getrag will be well overstressed it cheap, bolt in, and seems to handle abuse quite well.
GeordieSteve
I'll add to this that my goal is an 11 second car...
