Gauge Problems

So, the EGT saga continues. I am now in a position that if the car is running the gauge registers nothing but if i turn the engine off and then turn the key so the ignition lights are on the gauge seems to work fine.

 

Without the engine running i am passing 12.3ish volts down the cable but running this goes to 14.7ish. I am finding it hard to believe a gauge could be so sensitive but if anyone is going to have this trouble its me.

 

Anyone come across this before and if so how did they get around it?

 

Going to plum it straight into the battery tomorrow and see if that works.
