The front speakers look kinda easy to replace
how do i get them out? just pop off the front
cover? or do i need to remove the door interior??
if its just the cover - how do i "pop" them off?

I'm getting that merry-go-round feeling again.

Let me preempt all the follow up questions:

Ash has done some modifications to the front speaker mountings to fit larger speakers.
There's an earlier thread which covers front and back speakers, access, mountings, possible modifications, the slave amplifier, etc.

I did look for previous threads - but could not find
anything on how to remove the FRONT speakers?

Had a quick look at mine at lunchtime....

To be honest, I think it'd be a lot easier if you took the door trim completely off.  It might take a bit longer, but it'll be easier to get at.

Standard Toyota policy is to make things as difficult as possible - and if you want to get your rear speakers out you'll need to take the back parcel shelf - err, I mean rear seats - out.

The door panels must be removed completely as the speakers are housed in a sealed enclosure that bolts to the door frame.
Be prepared to be dissapointed ......... the stock front speakers are only 41/2'' despite the 6'' cover on the door panel !!

I upgraded to Kenwood 5 1/4 '' by making a wooden collar to fit to the stock enclosure ......... you'll see what I mean when you get the panel off

I tried to remove the front door panel (drivers side)
yesterday - with no luck.

I removed the 4 screws at the base, the screw in the
door handle and it would not budge ONE INCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyone else had these problems?

The rear seats pull off in minutes. The door trims likewise.

There are also 2 or 3 screws down the front edge (that is hidden in the door jam when closed) with plastic caps that need to be popped off .......... then , if I remember , it pops off at the bottom and lifts up and off

Has anyone tried to get 17cm speakers in with any success?

What size are the rears?

The only way to get any decent-sized speakers in the doors is to:

1) junk the stock speaker-cum-soundbox assembly.

2) fabricate a fibreglass panel that fills the hole in the inner panel of the door; in order to provide a speaker mounting such that when the speaker is affixed, it is sitting immediately behind the inner trim-panel cloth grill.

3) fabricate a small bracket and rivet to the new fibreglass infill so as to provide a fixing for the lower front inner-trim poppet fastener that would normally affix to the soundbox.

4) stick a ring of foam around on the inside of the trim panel, around the outer edge of the inner panel grill. The foam should be deep enough so that, when the inner trim panel is fitted, it seals the gap between the inner trim panel and the new fibreglass speaker mounting panel.

4) make good the stock vapour barrier so as to re-seal the inner and outer sides of the door (or fit some new stuff to suit).

Er, that's it.

J

Impressive! - But lots af agro... For me anyway...  It's a lazy thing...

Any ideas on the rears?

Any ideas on the rears? Hmm, lazy option, well just leave them as they are I'd say. Wouldn't cost you anything and it won't mean you have to make any effort. Yep, just leave them alone. That's what I'd do if I were you. And if they sound crap, then just turn the head unit to the off position. After all, it will save electricity which must be worth something.

OK, little less of the sarcasm please.

No, I don't want to go to the effort, expense and time involvement of fibreglassing enclosures and bonding door panels to the new enclosure.
I am quite happy and capable of making a collar to mount a 5" or even a 6" if possible. If your description is what you have to do to get a large speaker in, then fine, I'll just get a damn good 5" with good excursion to compensate for the lack of cone diameter.

As for the rears, I dont usually use the rears much as I prefer a good front sound stage. However I will be using a DVD player in the car and then I will require a decent 2 way in the rear.

Can any body else be so good as to advise me of the size of rear speakers or what can be done without remoulding the rear quaterpanels?

The rears take 61/2's stock . Probably room for 6x9's......haven't tried cos I like my components too much
The fronts are 4"std and can take  51/4's in a modded stock speaker enclosure....... or rip the enclosure out and replace with MDF board/collar and fit 61/2's.
As you are the ICEman, I'm suprised you haven't popped the door cards off for a looksee already..........10mins tops

The problem is time... I don't get any! Not only that, but I'm more on the management/technical side of things as opposed to the installation side. All I've done so far is secure the car. I expect I'll tackle the front speakers soon.

Now I know roughly what I'm aiming for I'm probably going to go for the new Phoenix 5" comp set up front, don't know about the rear yet except that it'll be a 6.5 coax of sorts. Subs? 2 x Kicker 8" squares or JL w6's... I'd like to build them into the space behind the rear seats.

I don't expect to have got it in and running for a good month or two. It'll happen gradually. Still I'm not too worried at the moment as I'm still at the "grin when you floor it" stage, and listening to the turbo(s) will do until then... (You can tell I've only just got the car)   :)

Ive fit 6.5 inch kenwood units up front, had to remove the existing enclosures though... I also used part of the stock speaker grill's , I removed the center section leaving the ring and fit the new speakers inside the leftover plastic ring, It was a really tight fit and a real pain in the ar$e to do but the results were really nice...
