View Full Version : Fitting UK Toyota stereo to J spec

I've got a '93 J spec MKIV with a knackerd radio/cd.  I bought Deans UK system off him, CD and radio - two single DIN units, standard branded Toyota.

I took my dash off today - How many looms does a Supe have?????

I found my existing system had a absolute mess of cables that plugged into two female looms that ran off into the right side of the dash.

In the bottom left, going into the passenger footwell were three looms.  Two of them had male sockets that looked like the two 'in-use' looms would plug straight into.  The third was a female plug on a fly-loom (is that the right term!!!).

I guess I rip out the old system and plug the two looms from the right side into the matching sockets on the left side.  The 'flying loom' is them plugged into the stereo.

Hereing lies the 'problem'.  The loom in the car is a 2 * 8 female plug with the center two pins on one side being replaced by the catch.  The back of the stereo I've got has a 2* 10 male socket with the following pattern (1=pin, X=flange and . = empty and it looks better in monospaced font!)

11X1111X11
1111X..111

I'm hoping to get down to a local car hi-fi place and chat about what I need to do soon, but so I can be forearmed, does anyone know if it is a simple lead I need.

I've not checked yet, but I assume I've still got the amp under the carpet.  Wouldn't have thought that they'd have bothered to take it out!!

Thanks

When I removed my Jap head unit, I found that once I had disconnected the connectors from the 3 plugs on the left (behind dash) that it connected straight on.

Gordon, on most cars the flying lead from the left harness connects straight into the stock stereo. ^Mine doesn't, and Paul Booth has possibly found someone else with the same fittings as I have. ^What I'm currently trying to do is locate either just the plug, or ideally the whold harness.

Have a look at http://www.cargills.demon.co.uk/supra/stereo.html to see what I've got and want. ^The second and third piccy show the basic problem I'm facing!

Is your harness up for grabs, assuming it is what I need?  Just seen your other thread, as you've got a seven speaker system I think it may well be different.

Ill try and find out if the 7 speaker system is different, although I think we may find that my harness has an extra 2 pin plug for the sub.
Ive not removed my harness yet (couldnt be bothered at the time) so its still floating free behind my dash, If I get a chance ill remove it at the weekend...

Cheers Gordon,  to get the harness out I didn't have to take the dash out - although it was out at the time and that made sure the flying lead wasn't snagged.  I unplugged the connectors from the amp, lifted the passenger carpet and the whole harness came out with a bit of teasing.

If the only difference is an extra connector at the amp end, thats just connected to what are unused pins at the dash end then it could well do!

Where abouts are you?
