View Full Version : Stock Jap Toyota stereo popping...
I had a stereo fitted to my gilfs 'ahem' car... upon finish the task the installation bloikey had a quick look at my SUp.
My right front speaker.. Pops. regardless of if volume is up or not. He said it may be center.. summat or other. Channel. centre channel. He also discoverd what he claims is a Toyota amp under passenger seat.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
Help?
Or have I overdone the chocolate liquers.

Lance, is it the original Jap stereo you've got? The stock amp does fit under the passenger seat - if you've got an aftermarket one then it probably doesn't use that amp.
I've got a UK spec stereo that I'll be putting up for sale soon if you want it - and if it fits... do you have a 6 or 7 speaker system?
Can't help with the popping.
Hiya Steve,
Its not Lance, similar plates tho... ;)
Stock jap stereo, bang on.
wheres the 7th speaker? I'm confused.
Does the UK one transfer straight in? Anyone fancy doing it?

Does this sound familiar Steve? :)
The 7th speaker is a sub-woofer mounted behind the rear seats. From what I can gather, the Jap spec GZ and UK models have this set up.
If yours is a 6 speaker system you can unplug the amp wiring loom from the left side of the dash by the tunnel and get a ISO adaptor to fit an aftermarket system and bypass the factory amp. (Factory amp has less power than most modern haed units.) - You can get the adaptor from almost any car radio dealer or Halfords etc - Autoleads PC2-17-4. Should be around £10ish - Much easier then cutting off plugs!!!
Steve can tell you more about trying to fit a UK head unit into a Jap car. It's not a straightforward job. After a conversation with Steve, I believe you'll need the UK amp, sub and wiring harnesses etc.

In addition to that last post, I would guess that a poping noise would be a problem with either the head unit or amp.
You were told it was a centre channel??? Certainly not as standard regardless of factory spec.
But he's right about the amp position.
Matt
Thanks for all that Matt. Lovely.
Its a stock Jap Toy stereo. Not sure about speaker behid seat. I'm proobably gonna go the none toy route. Any reccomendations on a suitible head unit to replace the big gap that will be left?
Also what sorta money can I expect to be charged for a decet head and speaker setup?
Cheers in advance.
The center channel on the head unit the geezer meant.. He pointed the finger to the head unit. Said that will prob need to be replaced. Excuse my igronance in what he said and how I recall it.

Hi Brad, sorry for changing your name there, looks like brainfade . To find the 7th speaker open your tailgate and if the floor is flat you don't but if it has a box emerging from the floor, just behind the rear seats then that's your 7th speaker.
If you have a 7 speaker then I THINK the stock UK system I've got (yours for 65 quid) should fit and use your under-seat amp. It won't fit the 2 or 3 Jap 6 speaker systems I've come across.
Have a look at http://www.cargills.demon.co.uk/supra/stereo.html (no crap web site comments please, I know!!) and let me know which plugs and which speaker system you've you.
As Matt says, an aftermarket one will easily plug into the harness using a standars ISO adapter.
Great site Steve.
(Face straight) ;I
Nope, site does exactly what it says on the tin...
Spot on.
To be honest... I'm not a fiddler, not looked at my car yet. But the likelyhood is I'm just gonna flirt it into an ICE shop Feb, when I get over the financial strain caused by Christmas and say what can you do for £500 quid.
Is 500 quid enough to get a reasonable system?
Leads 10 milly spanners, screw drivers. I can't do them.

£500 should get you a reasonable set up depending on what your goals are...
you can get a tape deck and CD slave unit to fill up the big hole if you want to use tapes for less than £300 which leaves a good enough amount of money to upgrade the speakers.
Look around your local dealers for an idea of what you want then drop me a line and I'll probably be able to sort you out with a better price.
Steve
I would be interested in your UK spec stereo if Brad (or Lance) doesn't want it.
Mine is a GZ import with a 7 speaker system. Will the UK one plug straight in with no agg? The one in the car has a single CD above a tape deck above a radio tuner. It also has a Toyota 6 CD stack in the boot with a remote control on a wire, which operates through the head unit.
Let me know if you think this would work.

Gordon, looks like Brad is off getting a new one. ^I'm pretty certain that it will fit your system - the plug should be the right one as far as I see. ^I can't see this one operating your CD stack though, there isn't another connector on it - unless the R/C head unit will drive the CD stack and not use the single CD.
I may be getting Alex's old one from him - you are in his general direction aren’t you? ^We could all meet up and rip dashboards out for a couple of hours!!
Have a look at http://www.cargills.demon.co.uk/supra/ForSale.html
^I paid 65 for it, so that’s what I'm asking. ^As an incentive you can have my existing Jap system thrown in for free :)

Yeah....sounds like a good idea Steve. Alex is about 20 miles from me. Bit of dashboarding, could maybe follow it with a pub lunch and turn it into a mini-meet.
My CD stack runs through the stock Jap System, so it would be nice to think it would run through the stock UK system too! Maybe this is too much to ask but certainly worth trying.
BTW how difficult is it to get the units out?
Happy New Year

Gordon, getting to it is easy. You carefully pull off the cover around the gear lever, unscrew the bit above the instrument cluster and then gently ease off the whole of the left side of the dash - carefully unplugging everything as you go.
I've just had another look at the UK system I'm selling and there definatly isn't anywhere else to plug the CD stacker into.
Pub lunch sounds good :), just need to sort things out with Alex.
Best wished to you as well, not long to go before the real drinking starts!
Steve I'll take it anyway (I think we're crossing topics with the for sale area!). Just as a matter of interest, are there more plugs/sockets on the J stock system than the UK stock system?

Can't help on the J stock system, mine is an aftermarket one.
