If you consider cost of changing it (around 150 pounds) plus all the bits and boobs which need to be changed WITH clutch, I would just drive a little longer with slipping clutch and then change it to proper and more expensive one. Do not budget on mechanical parts... If you want to save money, save them on interior by doing DIY, but not engine, transmission or brakes...

how long do the clutches generally last after they start slipping?

Not sure on an NA, but on a TT not very long at all.

Try to avoid it slipping when driving as a slipping clutch will generate a lot of heat which could damage your flywheel. If you can't drive it without it slipping, don't drive it at all.

I'd agree with advice above, fit genuine Toyota parts it you can.
