Hello all,
I wanted to pick the brain of those who have done some audio mods to
the their Supra. I want to dump the stock system and replace it with
a simpler unit. What I propose.

1) Change the front speakers from the 4 inch to 6.5 inch Polks
(which I already have from my previous car).
2) Dump the crappy sub
3) Change the rear speakers to 7x10. I cannot reasonably fit a sub
in my car (AeroRoof and need to retain the boot for the roof - And I
don't want to use the spare wheel arch).
4) Get a smallish 2 channel amp to run the 7x10s and my Sony
headunit to run the front speakers. I would like to be able to fit
the amp where the old one was (under the passenger seat) or maybe
where the old sub was. I laready have a Kicker Impulse 65 x 4 rms unit but it seems a little big to fit under the seat.

Any suggestions ? How easy is it to get 7x10s into the Supra ? How much fabrication and cutting is necessary ?
thanks

THanks
Andrei

I don't know much about this field but I can tell you that 7x10's are too big for the rear so expect to pay big bucks for a install which looks good/oem.

I'll be fitting 7x10 Kenwoods in mine when I take delivery of it.  I'm not sure how yet but I'll find a way.  I have a knack of fitting lots of kit into small spaces....

ie: x2 12" Pioneers subs and two 4 chan Kenwood amps in the boot of a 5 turbo.  I also modified the rear seat side cards to take a pair of Pioneer 6x9's.  So anything is possible.

Are there any small speakers available which will drop into the stock speaker holes, but are of a high enough quality to compete with larger aftermarket speakers in terms of quality/volume?

Going out on a limb here....

Just get good 6.5" speakers for the rear and splach a load of Dynamat sheeting around to seal the speakers into the quaters better. (They're sealing is crap as standard).
Get the best speakers in the front that you can afford/be bothered to mess around installing. 4" = easy 5" = not too much messing or 6.5" = agro but worth it.

You can get an 8" sub or 2 in the back if you are prepared to spend the time fabricating the enclosure to utilise the hole behind the seats. You can still park the roof where it should go if you make it well.
OR - Focal and JL audio do 5" and 6" subwoofers that will sit in an enclosure just slightly proud of the boot floor.
In fact, you can get 8"s to sit flush if you want to spend enough time modifying the panelwork and making an enclosure.

I wouldn't ever recommend 6x9's or 7x10's in the rear of a supra. Not in the rear 1/4's anyway. Behind the seat maybe...

Personal preference of course ;)

After the original post I went out and had 7x10s (Kicker)  fitted in the rear side shelf (custom mount) and 6.5s (Polk) fitted at the front. Alse stripped out all the stock stereo components . Sub, Enclosures, Amp etc.... (They weigh a ton)... The system now runs a Kicker 65 x 4 rms amp and a sony MD head unit with 10 CD stacker (stacker is in the spare wheel arch) and the sound is amazing. I have the 7x10s running lower frequencies only ~ so basically they act like small subs.
I will get some photos if anyone is interested.
