Hi guys,

Just wondering if someone could point me in the correct direction. I'm looking for some software to use that i can remote into machines and install applications and see what a users doing etc without effecting the user. I was speaking to someone yesterday that said they used gainware or something that sounds like that. I'm just looking at other ways to support our users in the office before doing a pc rollout to 300 staff.

thanks

Craig.

installing software without the users knowing is tricky. for that i would suggest something expensive like a Microsoft SMS server. I have one and its brilliant.

if you just want to connect to them, other than the inbuilt Remote Desktop in XP. you could try VNC, Putty or Dameware. but the users will know that you're connected if you use them.

its good stuff.

I have it looking after all my windows updates. also it pushes out all other software updates, it updated my 300 clients to Adobe 8 in one morning, and no one noticed it was happening! the best thing is when i get a new pc, i add it to the Active Directory, and the SMS server installs all the relevant software. sorted :D means I have much more time for drinking tea.

The best in terms of remote tech-support, along the lines of PC Anywhere but much more efficient and reliable (is anything Symantec reliable?!) would be NetSupport Manager. (http://www.netsupportsoftware.com/). I've used it for probably six years or so, and it's always been great.

Are you on 2003 R2? I think Adobe have jumped on the "Inventory Tool for Custom Updates" thing and you can install / update their products using that.

(I read about it recently but didn't pay too much attention, I might be way out)

Remote control software

VNC - Not brilliant
PcAnywhere - Not used it
Netop - Used it at work, works well...
