Just wondered, I've never seen one shooting past at a high speed but they sound fast :search:

Nope. You usually lose feeling in your arms with the vibration after 80mph and let go.

Nasty, horrid things. Rubber mounted handlebars - it's like driving a ruddy boat. Blech.

No they aren't fast at all. Just as well really because the sad gits that ride them would kill themselves at the first corner because they don't handle either.

Most UK Harley riders are 40-something dentists or accountants trying to be cool because they never were when they were young but they're giving it a last desperate shot now they've got a few quid.

Other than that, I really like them! :D

Some cars are fast, but only in a straight line. Harleys are not even fast in a straight line.

:( You may remember me posting a while ago about a V-Rod.
I didnt go for it in the end, so no, I dont own one but it was a close call. Jane and kids pleaded with me not to buy it, so I didnt, but like a couple of high end Supras on here recently, I had hand hovering over wallet then chickened out.
V-Rods are pretty damn sexy though.

Isn't the V-Rod the one where Porsche were involved? Something to do with the engine I think?

Anyway - regardless of that, there is far more to a bike than looking sexy (even assuming it does). I look damn sexy - but my g/f could give you a whole list of reasons why she'd rather have a different model. :d

Your average harley is not a fast bike, however they have the fastest production bike in the world. The Harley Davidson Destroyer blows any jap bike out of the water.

How long have you lusted after a big chopper then Ewen?

They aren't fast but the older custom ones are kind of iconic. A bit like an MGB gt you'd all appreciatte the looks but be damned if you'd ever own one.

I had a Harley for 5 years and it was a customized chopper.I loved it,I also had a Hayabusa and I loved that too but if i had to choose one of them I'd take the old Harley.

I've just read that the XL 1200S is capable of 12.9 Quarter mile.

I had an old Ironhead Harley :d they are not designed to be fast. I'd love a custom chopper :search: Shame the sun does not shine enough to warrant getting one....

I have had a couple, an old WLA 45 that i chopped 750cc side valve, not fast, and a 1976 Sportster, none of the older engines where quick, but the latest evo engines are, not in the same league as Jap superbikes but not to shabby, add a few tweaks + bore& stroke them and you have a monster.

Handle like poo, as fast as poo but my god are they sexy and sound great too.

I've always quite fancied a big noisy cruising Harley. They're not built for speed, but for cruising. I've got the jacket, shades and moody grimace, but I'd struggle with the flowing hair though.

My father in law and his wife have matching Fatboys. He let me ride his on Christmas day 05. What a ride. Not fast at all, no, but so nice to ride.

Chap at work has one with huge ape hangers. Got some huge block in there too- 1340cc I think. He's got the legs on me to about 90ish then I just fly right by- the HD tops out at 110ish, by which point I've already fucked off down the road.

Mind you I did get my arse handed to me by a Yamaha Vmax a while ago. I thought that'd be a fair fight and I got killed

The ultimate traffic light racer. These bikes are also crap at going round bends, but in a straight line, they will eat pretty much anything from a standtill, for the ones who don't know much about them, they are a V four, with a carb for each. wind her open normally, you will get one carb feeding the one pot, give her a handful, and she will change to two carbs feeding the one pot. I've seen a few with Nitro fitted too. They are quite an old bike now, but I still think they look sexy

Are they fast??

Fast in comparison to what?

In comparison to 'most' cars they'll accelerate reasonably quickly, so could be viewed as fast, although they don't have a high top speed.

In comparison to mid range (600cc) sports bikes they're slow.

In comparison to similar capacity sports bikes (1000cc+) they're pedestrian.

Having said that, I suspect the reason you don't see many tearing past is because people who buy them don't buy them to go tear-arsing around.:)

Very true you don't buy a Harley to hoon about the country roads, and you don't buy a sport bike to cruse the motorways,

I also used to like the Yamaha V Max, but it has now been usurped by the Triumph Rocket 3 in the 0 to 60 stakes, with a time of 2.8 sec.

I was on my way to my mums a while ago and it's all country lanes at the back of Farnham/Tilford. Unfortunately I ended up getting stuck behind a Harley 'meet'.

There wasn't anything cool about it at all, mostly old men with their beer bellies protruding. Seemed like family fun though.

I do quite like V-Max's - however, I could never own one, for the simple reason that my mum owns one. Which makes them a bit less cool in my eyes.
