hi

JUst wondering if anyone knows much about the Honda Vtecs. My mate has a 1.5 sohc vtec civic and the vtec was intermitantly working and now its not working at all. Honda want £60+vat just to look at it. Any ideas what it could be

That's very strange he's having vtec problems, cos by all accounts, not one has ever gone mechanically wrong.

It may well be a fuelling problem, maybe an ECU fault. My mate had my old Prelude dyno'ed last week and he was told the fuelling was leaning off on vtec, so may be worth having it looked at.

I think he'll have to get Honda to have a look, unless someone on a Honda forum maybe able to recommend a garage near you.

What year is it? Might be worth heading to a scrappy and try changing out the ECU.
£60 at a GOOD honda garage might be money well spent. AS Andrew said above, try Honda Owners Club for recommendations.

vtech wont work if the oil temp isnt to the right tempreture so possible he may have a faulty sender which in turn tells the ecu yes its hot enough go for it or no dont bring on the vtech.

Just a thought.

Vtec works on oil pressure if the oil is low then the vtec will not come in or it will be intermitent this is beause it needs oil pressure to shift the pin across to make it drive on the middle lobe on the cam shaft.

it bascically makes the car drive on different lobes of the cams and at the same time the ecu tells it to put more air and fuel in, in turn giving the vtec bout 20 to 30 bhp more than a honda without it, i used to have a crx vtec which i then turboed and its no comparison to the turbo car but a nice idea that makes the car have an incredible sound and a bit more power! very reliable to apparently only a few vtec heads have gone due to the vtec and that is after 200,000 miles!

Each cam shaft has double the amount of lobes as a normal one, and both of them are set at a different degrees, so when the engine reaches a certain rpm, the ecu switches it on to the next one, hence the more aggressive engine/exhaust tone, and the added power, vtec is good because when most cars run out of puff at about 5000-5500 rpm, vtec kicks in and carries on the power right up to the red line normally at about 8k on some hondas - including the integras and the new civic type r........

I would def check the oil level my mate had a crx vtec and it wasnt working due to the oil level being lowtopped it up and all was good.

i wouldnt rule out the vtec solineod either, you could do the manual diag on the ecu. bridge the brown 2 pin connector coming off the ecu and if the engine management light flashes then you know you have trouble make a note of the flashes and look it up in the haynes manual and save your self the 60 + vat from honda.

I cant beleive they have never had one go wrong in all the units they have smanufactured. Maybe they are just refering to unmodified ones.

As I bet you could nacker up a modified civic quite easily.

i had my one for 4 years mod'ed and the only thing that went wrong was the ignition control module and that was 60 bucks to replace great cars missing mine new owner is not looking after her :(

Amazing, cos that sounds exactly like my modded Prelude. I had it for 4 years also, and the only thing that went wrong was the ignition module. Cost around £120 to fix.

The 'new owner' of mine, a friend, has had 3 accidents in the year he's had it, and the 3rd one wrote it off. Idiot. Very sad :(

well that acciedent damage looks familiar too, i had a for KA reverse up my bonnet and wedged its self on top of me caused 2200 worth of damage his old man owned a night club and he was pissed so paid me out new front and a carbon bonnet on re build so he did not get band :d i posts some pics in the week

Here was mine, pushing 220bhp and a good amount of torque for a Honda. Tracked mine and it never missed a beat....bloody reliable.

But FWD got a bit boring after a while and I got to the point where it simply didnt have enough umph :D
