The aerotop

As all the instructions on how to take it on and off are all in Japenese, I was wondering if anyone had a large english diagram, as the way I'm doing it is taking a very long time and can't be right, there must be a quicker sequence of doing it!!!

Also, anyone from my area, any good garages specialising in these cars as my Toyota dealer was more than useless!

there will no doubt be a toyota specialist near you somewhere, hopefully someone more local to you will be along in a minute to enlighten you.

as for the roof, as far as i know it can take a good few minutes to undo and there's no real easy way to do it.

err ... undo all 5 bolts. lift off .. insert into boot.

Well there is this diagram under the box inbetween the seats showing which order to do it in! I am having to walk back and forth 20times doing up bolts!!

Takes me about 20 seconds a bolt (except middle that takes about 2 seconds) so all in all about 1 min 30 secs to remove (including putting into boot) and about 2 mins to put back on.

Gonna get a little torque wrench so it's quicker though.

6mm Allen key socket and small ratchet keep in in the centre arm rest, you can do all the bolts from the drivers seat and be topless in no time at all !

The main thing to remember is to tighten them up in the sequence shown on the diagragm otherwise the roof squeeks likes hell.....

I wouldn't mind some sort of quick release system on mine where an allen key is already in situ in each bolt hole, and when you wanted to remove the roof, you just twirled a wing nut or small handle to undo them and out it pops. Maybe I'll have a go some time!

If you have the little wrench with the allen key already, then that makes the job easier, but it takes around a minute to undo/redo etc. Totally worth it tho!

Apparently there is a tool that comes with it but prev owner lost it so I just have an allen key!

What about when you jump out to go to the shops etc and don't want to do it up properly isn't there a temp way of doing it like just the middle one?

Yep, just use the middle one. Or if its burred off slightly, like mine, just lightly do a couple of them up, just to hold it in place (two front ones preferably). It should be secure enough to hold, and make sure your alarm etc has been activated.

The middle one is designed as a temporary solution to save time.

As for that middle lock thing I haven't got a tool to do it! I reckon atm it's taking me like 6+minutes to it off and put it in the boot all on my own!!

Invest £12 in an electric screwdriver and a hex bit. I could have sworn it was 5mm, not 6mm. Makes the job sooo much faster.

He obviously had no idea the panel is $1600 from toyota.

Middle lock bit should be the same as the other 4? it is on mine anyway?

Could have sort of Supra aerotop tournement on who can take it off the quickest place it in the boot, then take it back out and refit.

I read on here there is a method according to a diagram? never seen that so wondered what that was?

I just slide the roof on (back first)

Then finger tighten so to speak the front 2 bolts.

Fully tighten the back 2 bolts

Then fully tighten up the front 2 again

And lock the middle catch

I find having the windows down a tad makes it sit easier when putting the top back on

Lol well I would lose as last night it took me about 30mins as on the number 4 bolt the thread is gone and it won't do up so was trying for aaaaages with a ratchet and another screw which fitted but wasn't right and still didn't work!! So now when I drive it squeaks and bumps about!! Toyota still haven't rang me back about these parts i ordered days ago for it either!! Does no where stock these bits?

And $1600?! I was actually wondering how much they were if I dropped it or something lol like I nearly have done!! Its already scratched from where the supports in the boot are not screwed in properly, again more bits I tried to gt from Toyota!!!

Oh and I found it nearly impossible with the windows up and it only goes back first?!

In F&F he had a quick release handle on the middle bolt so if none of the others were done up that would work... be bloody noisy while driving I imagine though

I bet that rattling is so annoying. I hope you find somewhere to get the bits for it. I've heard that a Steve Manley at a Toyota somewhere is really good on parts and prices.

Go to your local DIY store. They will be in the power tools section. You only need a cheap one. You will need a screwdriver bit adaptor, and a hexagonal screwdriver bit. I'm certain it's 5mm but you can buy multi-packs with several sizes in. Take your existing stuff with you for comparison and ask for help when you're there if you're not sure.

If it works/recharges off the cigarette lighter then that would be great. I've already got a 3.6v Bosch screwdriver. Would that work?
