View Full Version : Starting off easy

My head unit is already a Sony double-din and APPEARS to have been wired to NOT drive the original sub-in-boot.

I'll start slow with the door speakers BUT is it easy taking door panel off OR is there something I can break ??

THEN, to get the head unit it looks like it's fixed from BEHIND ? ie. the dash has to be removed (?) to get to the connectors (for my new Sub and autochanger to get plugged in) ??
Not like normal head units 'coming-out' from the front ??

ANY advice apreciated (would LIKE to do-it-myself but ????)

ps. Being EXTREMELY lazy, there's no way I can take the grill off the door speaker from the front ?? and replace with ~6" straight onto door panel (or can't you get old speaker out from the front ?).

RIGHT...

Just had a look at screws/poppers on doors - I think I can take that off OK without breaking it !

BUT looking through the edge of the 'speaker' grill Iam APPALLED by how far behind the door panel the actual speaker is...
THAT'S IT. I am definitely ripping the false grill off and mounting 5.5"/6" speakers straight on the panel (I'll worry about casing backs in after).
QUESTION: Is the feed to the door speakers (and all others come to that) a 'Full Range' feed, or has it already been 'crossed-over'. That is, is it worth buying a nice pair of 2 or even 3-way speakers or is the signal only mid-range anyhow ?!?

FORGET IT - DONE IT - - -

MUCH BETTER . . ! ! !

My double din unit fitted the same way, with eight (count 'em!) screws holding the head unit in.

If you remove the dash you wil find a pair of brackets the are screwed to the sides of the head. These brackets in turn screw to the dash chassis. If you remove those four screws the whole bracket / head assembly will come away.

The bracket also supports the ECUs for some other electrical systems, which escape me now, but the aerial relay is on top. You might need to unplug or remove these other bits to get the head unit out.

B*GG*R ME....

Well I suppose nobody's gonna 'nick it in a hurry ! ?

I don't want to get the head unit OUT unless it won't contol my autochanger.
I just need to get to the back to access outlets (Phono?) and changer IN plug.

Might try tomorrow (MIGHT NOT ?)

Done it....

THAT WAS A STRUGGLE.....

The dash comes out in a logical way BUT doesn't it take ages.
and following the transmission tunnel for the 'changer leads was
OK until the carpet - the bloody thing is made-to-measure then
stuck down good-and-proper !!

Hacked the old "sub" out of the hatch and SAVAGED the plastic shelf to drop the changer into the middle. Not a bad fit, just a bit tight.

The memory in the changer STILL had the disc titles in - when I put a CD in the head unit it even retrieves the title from the 'changers memory ?!?

MMMMM.. WOT TO RIP-ABOUT NEXT !!!!!?????
