Gaz Walker
Great development. "The 4L80E is essentially a TH400 transmission with overdrive, and is electronically controlled. This setup is capable of handling 1200-1500HP!!!!" http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=424344 Gaz.
Pete
A cool $7499! So what's a TH400 then?
Sheefa
Jesus, that's a lot of BHP capability! Video clip is a little boring and doesn't really show the box being put through its paces though, surely he only engages 1st through to about 3rd at a max of 70-80mph? Nice for the keen dragsters out there though!
Bobbeh
2 or 3 gear auto box built for drag racing.. iirc.
michael
So what's a TH400 then? A fairly cheap, readily available, clunky gearbox from the olden days that's as strong as an ox and great for drag racing. It's been adopted by the Supra community and modified to become a bolt on kit with a hefty premium. Various versions are available but compare these offerings: http://racetransmissions.com/store/product_info.php/cPath/1_25_59/products_id/65 http://www.spracingonline.com/default.asp?action=productdetail&prod_id=3140
Bobbeh
Built by GM isnt it? Or was that the powerglide?
Gazboy
So I am right thinking that this box is a three speed with O/D? If so, what is the theoretical top speed for the o/d ratio? Has anyone else ever wondered how fast a 8000bhp top fueler would go given a run at Ehra Lessien?
Gaz Walker
So I am right thinking that this box is a three speed with O/D? Yes, but the main point is - its running off an AEM ECU, as in its shiftpoints as determined by a ECU thats not standard And it'll behave like a standard box. But on the drag strip it'll shift instantly and hold massive amounts of power - its the best of both worlds. With a 6 speed diff it would do 250+ on 30" tall tyres (mentioned in the thread...) Gaz. Pete
Would you want to do 250+ with tyres like that? Our own 340 (or is that 320 can't remember) box is three speed with O/D anyway I believe?

Pete
Hell no It is yeah, but it won't take that level of abuse. And this shifts faster Gaz. Any idea if the VVTi box shifts faster than the older ones? I swear my tip shifts much faster.

GeordieSteve
hmmmm I was under the impression the TH400 would be unbearable at motorway speeds. Will this box conquer that problem?
Gaz Walker
hmmmm I was under the impression the TH400 would be unbearable at motorway speeds. Will this box conquer that problem? Yes because it has the 4th gear technically - so will drive like a stock box. Should be fun when you overtake too Gaz.
bondango
Max top of th400 is around 131 depending on rear setup? but its does sound sweet..especially if setup right..
GeordieSteve
Apparently it'll be great for high top end as well.... hmmmmm nice!
