Not sure if its been sugested before and I sugested it to Pixelfill, he sugested posting here so here it is.

Was wondering why we dont use the forum domain name for mail addresses? Im sure members would pay a top up to their membership for an optional club e-mail address.

I estimate this could either be done buy buying in the service or on our own with licenced software and hardware rental for approx £3-5 per member per year. Estimates based on 500 members taking up the option over a 2 year term!

What do people think?

Good idea.

I thought of that a few days ago but did not post it incase I looked a twat for saying it lol. I like the idea TBH. As long as there is enough interest and it can be done.

We do, but afaik, it's for supermods only.

If each members has a 10-20mb email space, dunno how many paid. But lets say 60% of all members signed up to the forum. That's an average of 65,140 mb of space needed. I have owned alot of websites in my time, for design and hosting purposes.. and for that much space.. You'd need a dedicated host box with a high HIGH bandwidth.

Who's stumping up the cash? :P

Members! you can buy in the services for £3-5 per member/mailbox per year. Not all members will be intrested but even if they were the maths add up. We can have dedicated server for a mail application at very little money and providing you manage the mail limits correctly then the bandwidth is not an issue. Business mail services run on medium spec servers with thousands of users and have limited bandwidth sometimes as low as 1-2Mb connections. Trust me I do this for a living.

Anyone else?

Technically it is possible, and if the mail box sizes where limited then bandwidth shouldn't be an issue either. We have it all setup to for supermods so we could extend that to members too. But is there really a demand for it? (Poll added)

But not Events Organisers ?

Surely these are the members who would benefit from a direct tie into the club. When trying to "prove" their credentials to potential venues a club email address would have merit to them.

My big concern from a club perspective if opening up to all members would be the implications if a members email address was hijacked and used for inappropriate emails - e.g. mass mailing

True Mike that is always a risk, we would have to mitigate that(as much as possible) with decent password policies!

But not Events Organisers? No one ever asked. The supermods don't have real mail boxes on the server, we merely have email forwarding so we bung our @mkivsupra.net email address online without the fear of our real accounts being harvested for spam purposes. And even those are only created when asked for.

Would be handy to myself as an events moderator, and probably the rest too. Would it have a webmail facility too?

If you want one now, like the supermods have, then no - it is simply an email forwarder.

So the sender would see our real addy, rather that one with a mkivsupra.net domain?

You could setup your mail client to use the club address as the 'from' address, assuming you use something like outlook rather than hotmail - although you can set the reply-to address in hotmail but your original email address would still be used for the 'from' address.

I only have access to my outlook during the evenings, so probably not worth it in my case.
