View Full Version : Project Section
This has been suggested before, but thought I'd raise it again following Pete's projects thread.
I'd like to see the addition of a Supra Projects section, where members can post details of their projects.
I like this idea. I think it would be good to give each person control over their thread. That way they can lock it while posting up long sections of info and then open it for comments, delete unnecessary comments etc and ultimately have a nice tidy document of their project.

Only prob i can see is debates over what constitutes a "project" and therefore what makes it into the section. Otherwise every Tom, Dick and Harry changing from a stock front bumper to a Veilside will want to be in there.
How about the mods have to vet the project first?
That way they can also set up some kind of mod-like control for the member as well.
Mods are aware of and discussing the idea (or so Homer says) :)
I think discussion in the threads can be healthy, as long as it's not hundreds of "Ace!" and "Wow mate" type comments.
We could just prevent people creating threads in that forum and move threads in as needed. (Same as the group buys forum).
I'm not sure I can allow members to locked their own threads without them being a moderator. However, as the forum will be low volume it shouldn't be an issue to get a mod to tidy up the thread if someone posts in the middle of it.
Sounds like a plan!

Does that matter too much though?
Good idea I having a T60 to T78 conversion done (will I qualify)??

I think it does. Projects undertaken by the likes of your good self, Supradibbs, JamieP et al are far, FAR, more interesting that "I've just put a Nur Spec exhaust on".

I totally agree! Proper project threads in one area would be good
Great idea. Not sure how you'd get round the 'whether it's a project' problem but I would have thought that common sense will prevail in that respect.
Pete's thread highlighted how much interesting stuff is going on at the mo. :)

How about the other way around, similar to Tech ie. members can post a new thread in the section, then anything deamed as a non-project gets moved into chat.
We do try and endeavour (time permitting) to tidy up project threads and copy them into the tech how to sections and such like.
I've been looking after Tony Licence's blitz twins conversion thread copying the pertinent points into the sticky thread in the Tech FAQ's and guides.
However, I've been a bit remiss later and not had time to do it, but I'm sure between the lot of us we can copy threads and keep them tidy for future reference.:)

My point exactly. Ive recently changed the front bumper and skirts on mine, plus blinged out the engine bay but i wouldnt consider it a project and certainly wouldnt think it warranted a thread on its own for people to follow the progress.
Good idea, have the section set up and when the project is finished a mod can move it to projects section then prune out the chit chat.
how about a members journal as a slight variation.
Each member effectivly does a writeup of their own car then adds to it when they have modded it in some way. Comments are only allowed by the original poster and any other comments are done via pm. Any posts in the thread are easily spotted and deleted no matter what the content. Low maintenance! We have a similar idea running on e36coupe and its always good to see what others are doing to their cars.

Can't you just use the text in your Garage section for that?
Where would this projects forum go?
I also like the idea of using your garage as your own personal project area, then maybe have a sticky thread with a link to all decent projects that have been documented in the garage section.
lol Ive never looked in the garage bit...
Is it possible to allow a thread type style in the garage that people can update as they would replying to a post?
Does the garage list link go to the most recently used garage or in order? If it could be set to list the most recently updated garage it saves on having to have sticky threads. All you would have to do is click garage list and it shows who has been busy!

Ive been looking on the forum for a project i see a few months ago. I forgot to subscribe and cant for the life of me find it.
Can another sub catagory not be added to supra chat so idiots like me can find it easily

The problem with the having projects only posted in the garage is there is no history. The thing thats great about project threads is you can read every process and decision that has to be made in Chronological order. Its helpful for people who are thinking about doing similar and is a great resource for future members.
Virtually every major car club has a projects section, we don't want to miss out, do we? :D
My only resevation is we already have a too many forums and sub forums...

Simple solution, just get rid of all those 'other' trader sections  :D
I think it should be located in the technical section somewhere.
I like the idea too, lets get it sorted so i can start my project thread in that sub forum come the 23rd april!

There's nothing stopping you creating one in Chat ;) If the project section were to go ahead existing/old project threads would be moved there.
