i suggested this a long while back, but then we updated the forums & it all got lost

some people thought it was a good idea so i thought i'd renew the suggestion

so the idea is to allow people to tell you about a product that they have purchased (including price & where from etc) because they think other members would benefit from it. Ideally, the post would include a review on it & potentially some details on installation if it was appropriate

for example, i recently purchased a Kenwood double din headunit (DDX-6029), which fits perfectly into the Supra double din slot & got it for a bargain price too at £459. it has all sorts of add-ons available, including the iPod cable which i also got for it and it's also a touch screen.

here's where i bought it from http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/stock01/ddx6029.asp

i'll do a review if the forum starts up

Wez, you missed the bit about the review and where from in your post ;)

yeah sounds like a good idea. They have this on the rovertech.net site I go on, and it's a handy little section.

Yep and I still machine rover bits, and I still happen to have a rover coupe turbo that I have broke on the drive.

The supra is just a stop gap before another rover coupe turbo. :eyebrows:

Wez,

just a question about your recent experiences with the Kenwood?
Have you managed to connect it to a PC, can you feed VGA to the RGB connection, also can you connect the touch screen to a PC, or is it effectively a standalone unit?

it's a standalone unit Mike. As you know i was all for a Car PC but decided this was less wiring & it dropped straight into the double din slot without any fabrication required

you can't feed VGA in directly but you could use the video in if you had a converter cable or video out on the graphics card

the touch screen won't work for the computer no, it doesn't have a USB input for the mouse functions like a dedicated touch screen has

Cheers Wez,

I'm hovvering in both camps at the moment, I quite like the idea of a CarPC. but don't like the available VGA touch screens. plus it soon mounts up when you add in costs such as amplifier, screen, power supply, case etc. To the point where you could buy a nice top end Pioneer AVIC for pretty much the same money :search:

the CarPC is by far the most advanced option & is pretty much unlimited with what you could do with it, i'm just lazy!

for VGA screens, the Gain/Xenarc one that i had is supposedly the best one. i also found somewhere that made a custom double din frame (normally for an Impreza) for it to sit in instead of the regular housing, but that was another £80 or something
