Whats best for BPU - SMIC or FMIC

hi guys, I have a TT auto and I think my intercooler is due a change but I dont know whether to get a front mount, (I like the look and price of the Miami GT one £400) Its a 2 row I believe or a new SMIC, again Miami GT's £250 from what iv read they seem good.

anyway will a front mount be too big for BPU, Im only running 1bar but im getting an EBC to increase to 1.2 (most driving will be at 1bar) or will It be better than a replacement SMIC. Iv done a search but couldnt find much. Thanks.

I guess they havent been tested and the SMIC is cheaper, does the job and a good point by merkx I dont have to declare to the insurence. But I have an aftermarket front bumper so as I found out the SMIC looses its advantage over a FMIC as the original air ducting is lost. But say it wasnt the miami GT intercoolers, I know people highly recommend CW SMIC and also think the G-ready 2row FMIC is v.good now out of those which have been tried and tested by members and I gues lots of others which would be best suited to a BPU car with an aftermarket bumper?

Thanks for all the replies and help guys I just want to get it right first time when I buy one.

If the FMIC is ducted so that air passes through it, and not around it then it should be ok (though you are restricting air flow to your radiator).

If you have a stock bumper, then SMIC for BPU would be enough, but if your using an aftermarket bumper then you could either keep the SMIC and modify the ducting to it or go for a FMIC.

Chris - I'd go for an FMIC if you have a TS fitted. Nice wide mouth and with a bit of careful ducting, you should be able to pass plenty of air through both the FMIC and Rad. Gamer has run his FMIC with no rad cooling problems at all, pushing a decent single setup.

Take a look at the Greddy 2-row if I was you. Perfect for BPU (not overkill) and even a small single. I have thise fitted to mine and it seems bloody good. No heat issues so far either, but it is winter! :)

Good luck.

The SMIC is always going to be better imo, ive got a front mount but only as I plan to go single at some point in the future, but even then im still considering using an uprated SMIC. The ducting and heat transfer of the original SMIC Toyota installed is far superior in every way to a FMIC which makes it better in my opinion. I would stick with a new toyota one ideally or a Chris Wilson one if you can get hold off one

True Mikey, I agree but unless you have a stock bumper still, the ducting is of little use for a SMIC surely. I'd happily go for a CW SMIC too for the cash, if I wasn't going to go aftermarket front though.

I just think an FMIC, with a good choice of front bumper with a wider mouth and some improvised ducting would be just as good, if not better than a SMIC.

Just my two cents of course. :)

Thans for the info. as mentioned there is a big mouth on the front of the top secret bumper which will benefit a FMIC I guess. So if I create some sort of ducting to prevent the air from going around a FMIC will enough air pass through to cool the radiator aswell?

Also sheefa, how much did you pay for your G-readdy 2-row if you dont mind me asking and does it come with polished pipes etc. Thanks
