Well guys I tend to steer clear of the whole ICE thing and generaly just fiddle in the engine bay. However I do like to listen to a CD now and again. The problem I have is my head unit dosnt turn on at all. I was told when I got the car that the amp would need 2 20amp fuses before the headunit would turn on. However these are now inplace and there is still no power.

After having a hunt about I found the main power lead that runs of the + batt terminal had this funny thing on it.

Is this some kind of fuse?? because when I unscrewed one end this happend

Where can I get another one and how do I get it out and fit a new one???

Cheers

Its for an aftemarket amplifier, do you have one? if not then just remove the cable.

Thats not the reason the CD player won work - that comes from the battery.

You need to check your ignition live and perminant live from the min wiring loom to the stereo. The amp has nothing to do with it in any way....

I also found that I blew the fuse in the supes fuse box on a couple of occassions. Check it and maybe uprate it to a 30 amp. Normally a 20amp to my knowledge.

The head unit may also have a fuse plugged in the back - again take a lok and try that..

in order of pre flight checks..... lol
1) fuse box
2) fuse in back of stereo
3) perminant live (yellow wire)
4) Ignition live (red wire)

5) if all else fails PM me and I will see f I can talk you through anything else...

Good luck.

Also check the earth from the headunit. If the earth connection isn't good enough the the unit won't switch on.

looking at picture 1, it looks like the fuse might have been broken before you opened up the holder?

Those fuses you can get from Halfords if you REALLY need to (cheaper online though) and it'd be used, as already said, for an aftermarket AMP (not headunit or stock amp's) so shouldn't stop your HU from working.

First thing I'd do is get a multimeter across the wires at the back of the HU, and make sure you're getting 12v.

Yep - but to do that you got to take the head unit out. If its the fuse in the cars fuse box at fault then you would be so pissed off to have striped the dash down to find its a fuse close to hand... Well I would...

Then maybe - check the wires on the HU.. yes.

As for the earth - if its a bit dodgy then the unit would flicker on and off with bumps and vibrations. If it is totally severed - totally agree, this could be checked while the HU is out. Earths however can be a nightmare so I was leaving that for the last resort..

Is it really hard to get the stereo out of a supra? Genuine question - on my car i can remove the stereo using the correct removal tools in less than about 30 seconds.... Apologies if its harder on a supra :(

But i suppose at least if you check the voltage at the back of the HU, you definately know that the cables are fine from end to end - checking at the fuse box would only guarantee that the voltage gets to the fuse fine, but won't check the wires from there to the HU.

The HU is bolted into the supra dash.

yep - dash panels have to be taken out and then un screw the head unit etc - takes about 15 mins I suppose. All toyotas are the same - steroes are theft proof cos to nick them you would have to nick the whole car!!!!

damn - well, i suppose it's nice to know that they are more securely held in place, but a bummer if you need to do stuff to it :(
